Each month, I’ll pose a question for us to discuss in the comments. The goal is to crowdsource the best resources, advice, and recs. Everyone can see the question of the month and my personal answer, but only paid subscribers can join in the comments to share their answers.

Question: What’s a book you’ve read that has been most helpful to your business?

My answer:

Your Blue Flame: Drop the Guilt and Do What Makes You Come Alive by Jen Fulwiler. Interestingly, this isn’t a business book but more motivational / self-help. As so many of us can attest, our mindset in business can be just as impactful as our actual technical business skills.

I read this book after being in business for a few years. I was struggling with guilt. I LOVED work. I LOVED my job. It fueled me and gave me energy. How was it okay to be working and having fun? It almost felt wrong. Most people I knew worked their 9-5 jobs and were eager to clock out and not think about work until the next day. I, however, was energized by new projects, books to write, and business ideas.

Reading Your Blue Flame allowed me to rightly reframe this love as a positive thing. Jen refers to this as a “sacred duty to others” and a way to make the world a better place.

For anyone struggling with either identifying or embracing your “blue flame,” I cannot recommend this book enough!
